Carl Dean, the husband of legendary country singer Dolly Parton, passed away on Monday at the age of 82 in Nashville, Tennessee. Parton confirmed his death in a heartfelt social media statement, expressing gratitude for the years they shared.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,” she wrote.
A Love Story That Spanned Decades
Dean met Parton outside a laundromat in Nashville in 1964, on the very day she arrived in the city to pursue her music career. The singer recalled being struck by his genuine interest in her as a person.
Two years later, on May 30, 1966, the couple married in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia. Despite Parton’s immense fame, Dean chose to remain out of the public eye, focusing on his asphalt-paving business in Nashville.
The Inspiration Behind “Jolene”
While Dean rarely stepped into the spotlight, he played a role in Parton’s music. He famously inspired her hit song “Jolene,” which was based on a bank teller who had a crush on him. Parton once joked that she noticed how much time he spent at the bank and turned the situation into one of her most iconic songs.
Their intensely private relationship even sparked speculation that Dean didn’t exist—a rumor Parton laughed off. “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me,” she quipped in a 1984 interview.
Legacy and Surviving Family
Dean and Parton had no children but remained devoted to each other for nearly six decades. He is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie.
